Biggest and Best Tag Rugby Festival yet

Biggest Tag Rugby Festival yetHundreds of primary school children competed in the annual Salisbury Primary Tag Rugby Festival on Wednesday March 26.

The festival took place at Salisbury City Football Club with 32 schools taking part, including St Mark's, Broadchalke, Woodlands, Larkhill, Wardour and Idmiston and many more.

Organised by Salisbury District Council with support from the Salisbury and Avon Valley School Sports Partnerships and Wilts and Dorset RFU, the festival was a culmination of local primary school teachers receiving training in tag rugby to deliver the sport to their pupils.

Salisbury District Council's Sports and Community Officer, Karlene Jammeh, said: "This is one of the biggest festivals that we have organised in Salisbury District for local primary schools. It was absolutely fantastic to see over 300 young people competing and enjoying tag rugby. We were impressed by the skill level and enthusiasm of all those taking part."
"The aim of the project was to encourage more primary schools to teach tag rugby. Tag rugby enables both boys and girls to develop basic rugby skill, to compete on even terms and to work as a team."
"It's a great sport for young people, it enables them to achieve success, which is important when introducing anything new, particularly sport."

SEN Gymnastics Festival

SEN Gym FestivalOn Monday 17th March 2008 at Five Rivers Leisure Centre, the SEN gymnastics festival took place during the morning. Exeter House, Highbury First and Primary School and Woodford Valley all took part.

It was an excellent morning, challenging the pupils as they made their way round a six station circuit including: trampolining, trampette work, balance beams, gym circuit, jumping platforms and a body management station.

All pupils had a thoroughly enjoyable morning and were supported throughout by enthusiastic and diligent leaders from St Edmund's Girls' School. The leaders not only motivated and guided the pupils, but as a special treat they put on a half time gymnastics display

A huge thank you to all who helped with the organising and running of the day because it was a huge success and the pupils who took part challenged themselves in all events and loved every minute.

Fundamental Skills Festival

Five Rivers Leisure Centre was the venue for an afternoon of fun events and skill development, all based around fundamental skills such as balance, coordination, agility, ball skills and reaction time that took place 18th January.

The 50 children from year's 1 & 2 at Woodford Valley, Stratford-sub-Castle, Idmiston and St Osmunds were divided into four groups and rotated around four skills circuits throughout the afternoon.

Following a large group warm up led by Sue Edwards the children were instructed and led by the Community Sports Leaders Team from South Wilts and Bishops. As the children performed the Sports Leaders awarded stickers to everybody for effort and skill level.

The afternoon was concluded with certificates for everybody and it was apparent by their faces that a grand day out was had by all.

Hockey Festival (Laverstock,Salisbury High & South Wilts)

The sun definitely shone on the day of the Hockey Festival this year and it was a glorious autumnal scene that was created.

The level of skill and determination was great to see as ten schools battled it out for the title with many games going to extra time and even penalties as a result.

There were some close performances throughout Round One but eventually Idmiston, Dinton, Winterslow and Woodford saw themselves through to the semis, leaving Greentrees and Wilton to battle it out for 5th and 6th place; a very close game indeed which could only be decided by penalties.

Both Winterslow and Woodford battled hard in the semis only to lose out to the gritty determination of both Dinton and Idmiston.

The final was yet another close call going to extra time. Both teams played superbly but the sheer guts and determination of a very cohesive and lively Idmiston side saw them deserved winners.

As the day progressed fair play by all teams was recognised with the award going to Winterbourne Earls.

Well done everybody, a great day.
