Braeside Survival report

Braeside Survival CourseThis year saw the second time that the survival course has been offered to our Yr6 G&T pupils within the partnership. Once again it was a superb experience with all involved being pushed to the extreme and putting Ray Mear's to shame !

15 pupils from across the partnership primary schools were involved and they were kept busy with a variety of activities that took place on 8th and 9th March 2010. Activities included campcraft - building a shelter from scratch with nothing more than a piece of tarpaulin, some rope and whatever other bits and bobs they could find lying around. For many it was the first time using knives and saws.

In their groups of 3 they had to collect firewood, make and sustain their own campfires, on which they cooked their dinner (hot dogs, baked beans, some made their own scones, marshmallows and hot chocolate !) and kept themselves warm.

During the evening we had orienteering and nightline activities, followed by a rather chilly (very cold) night out under the stars ! Only 2 out of the 15 pupils went into the emergency lodge so it was a brave and brilliant effort for all those who fought off the cold.

The final day involved taking down of camps and canoeing.

A great time had by all and well done to everyone who took part, especially to Olivia and Callum for achieving best 'boy' and 'girl' awards !
